Three Mexicans, including a woman, and a Venezuelan were detained at Dubai on Tuesday in connection with the R6.6-crore diamond heist from a stall at the India International Jewellery Show in Goregaon on Monday. The Dubai police detained the four accused — Guerrero Lugo Elvia Grissel (24), CamposMolan Elias (39), Gonzalez Maldonado Mauricio (24) and Gutierez Orlando — following an Interpol alert.
The accused had swallowed 887.244 carats of diamonds —300 pieces — that have now been recovered, Himanshu Roy, JCP, crime, said, adding that the Mumbai police have requested the Dubai police to deport them to India.
They were identified on CCTV by employees of the Israeli jewellery firm, Dalumi, whose diamonds they stole. Once it was found that they had taken a flight to Hamburg with a transit at Dubai, the Interpol was alerted.
“They appear to be professionals. We will try to find out if they are connected to an international diamond cartel,” Roy said. The police have also not ruled out local help.
