Mumbai Diamond thieves identified
The theft at the India International Jewellery Show-2010 in Mumbai of diamonds weighing 88,999 carats has international origins as the three persons behind the theft are identified as Mexican nationals through CCTV footage and Visitors records.
The three persons have managed to escape to Dubai and the Police is now seeking the help of Interpol to nap the thieves. The Indian embassies in UAE and Mexico will also help authorities get hold of the thieves.
The authorities are also trying to determine the next location of their travel with the help of Interpol. Vasant Mehta, president of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) said that the three culprits are Mexican nationals and including a woman.
He further said that the three went directly from the exhibition to the airport and left the country unnoticed. The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at Sahar is only about fifteen minutes drive from the exhibition centre.
According to Additional Police Commissioner (north region) Ramrao Pawa said that the theft came to light when the organizers were packing up after the exhibition ended on Monday evening after five days.
The Israeli national, Guy Ezekeil Vaz, a sales manager with Dalumin Co of Hong Kong who filed the complaint said five foreign nationals had visited the stall on Monday afternoon and some of them managed to divert his attention and the robbery took place.
The incident was first reported to Jewellery Export Promotion Council which recommended that he should lodge a police complaint. The exhibition was sealed for two hours but the culprits had already escaped.
The fact that the thieves were able to carry the diamond box through several levels of security, including Mumbai Police, private security and arrangements like detectors, electronic swiping of entry cards, CCTVs made one person say that there could be some insider help in the incident.
The India International Jewellery Show attracts participants from 800 companies around the world and is the third largest event of its kind in the world. The incident is first of its kind in the 27 years of history for the exhibition.
